RED BARON MISSION BUILDER PATCH KIT

Integrating Red Baron Mission Builder Aircraft and Aces into Career Mode

      INTRODUCTION

Time constraints in the release of Red Baron Mission Builder
prevented Dynamix from integrating the new aircraft and new aces
into Career Mode. The files included in this ZIP add these new
aircraft and aces to Red Baron campaigns. Each aircraft file set
modifies one or both of the Mission Builder squadron tables. Each
ace file set modifies the Mission Builder ace table and possibly
one or both of the squadron tables. This approach allows players
to tailor the changes to their personal preferences. Some of these
changes are not historically accurate. We feel that some historical
inaccuracy is a small price to pay for the ability to fly with and
against the new aces and new aircraft while in a campaign.

      FILE PATCHING

Each change is made with a set of two files; a batch file to invoke
DOS DEBUG and a script text file to specify DEBUG edit commands.
You must copy each set of files you wish to install into your
Red Baron directory. To install a patch, type the patch BAT file
name at the DOS command prompt. You must be in your Red Baron
directory to install the patch. The BAT file will make a backup
of the file or files it will modify prior to making the modifications,
if those backups don't already exist from a previous patch execution.
The batch file ZAPEMALL.BAT will install all patches.

      EXAMPLE

You are at the DOS command prompt in your Red Baron directory:
      C:\DYNAMIX\BARON>

You want to install the Udet patch: type UDET

      HISTORICAL NOTES AND INACCURACIES

Not all the units with which the new aces flew are included in
Red Baron. In designing these patches, we decided to place the
aces with a unit that was at least in the same region as their
actual unit. In the cases of Berthold and Dallas, their commands
of Jasta 14 and Number 40 Squadron, respectively, are historically
      accurate.

Berthold was actually a member of KEK Vaux, attached to the
Second Army, from Jan 1916 to Sep 1916. He was on medical leave
from May 1916 to Jul 1916. The Jasta 14 assignment is accurate.
From Aug 1917 to Sep 1917 he was in Jasta 18. His second medical
leave was from Oct 1917 to Feb 1918. Berthold was CO of
Jagdgeshwader 2 from Mar 1918 to Aug 1918, when he was shot down
and crash landed. He was personally forbidden to fly any more by
      Kaiser Wilhelm.

Von Schliech was actually CO of Jasta 21 from Mar 1917 to Jun 1917.
He was on medical leave for dysentery during Jul 1917 and relieved
of command. He was given command of Jasta 32 in Aug 1917, and
flew through Nov 1917, when he became ill again. In Mar 1918 he
became commander of JagdGruppe 8, which was expanded in Aug 1918
to JagdGeshwader 4. His given name is Eduard; Ritter is a title.

Degelow actually flew with Jasta 7 briefly, under the command of
Jacobs. He was actually CO of Jasta 40. When he arrived, the aircraft
consisted of Albatros D.Vs and Pfalz D.IIIs. He remarked that this
was bad for him, since he had flown a Fokker Dr.I with Jasta 7.

Boelke actually flew Halberstadts and preferred them to the
Fokker E.III. The presence of Halberstadts in Feldfleigerabtelung
      #203 is somewhat speculative.

Udet flew Halberstadts, SSW D.IIIs, and Fokker D.VIIIs.
In Apr 1918 and May 1918 he was with Jasta 4 in Metz, flying
SSW D.IIIs. Jasta 15, stationed nearby, actually had SSW D.IIIs.

      HISTORICAL NOTES AND INACCURACIES (continued)

Barker spent most of his career at the Italian-Austrian front, and
as a flight instructor in England. In Sep 1917 to Oct 1917 he was
posted to Number 28 Squadron at Droglandt. His only other Western
Front posting was with Number 201 Squadron in Sep 1918 to Oct 1918.

Dallas actually flew with Number 1 Naval Squadron, from 1915 to
Mar 1918, when he was made CO of Number 40 Squadron.

MacLaren was actually a member of Number 46 Squadron.

Guynemer flew with Escadrille N.3, which was the first Stork
squadron, in Dec 1915. The Storks were flying Nieuport 11s at
      the time.

Rickenbacker and most other American pilots flew Nieuport 28s in
spring 1918. The Nieuport 28 served with American aero squadrons
through the end of the war.

Ball is alleged to have actually issued a challenge to two German
pilots after being forced to withdraw from a dogfight. Pages 2-10
and 2-11 of the Red Baron documentation recapitulate the tale.

The aircraft assignments to squadrons is based on historical
documentation, and some speculation in the case of the Halberstadt.
