Down and Dirty pre-release for entrants only

Here are the tapes and descriptions for all of the entries for the film
contest. I've still got more work to do on this read.me file before I can
upload it, such as giving names to the untitled films, adding judge's
comments, and some other things.
I'm sending this incomplete version out only to the entrants in the
contest, since you guys shouldn't have to wait any longer to see it. I'll
upload a finished copy to the forum in a few days, but for now everything
you really need (.tap's, and colour files) is (are?) here.

AUTHOR'S COMMENTS: Go with a flight of intrepid German aviators on a raid
into Allied territory.

You have been assigned as flight leader of a flight of Albatros DIIs to
overtake and protect a Zeppelin on a bombing raid of an Allied supply
dump. As the story opens you are airborne with two wingmen trying to catch
the Zepp and protect it from the large concentration of enemy fighters known
to protect the supply dump.

With throttles to the firewall, your flight drones through the night, ever
watchful for enemy scouts. Although you can't see any now, you know that SPADs
and Pups are probably climbing now to counter the Zeppelin's destructive
threat.

As you draw alongside the gigantic Zepp, a flight of Pups hoves into
range and the Allied flight commander rocks his wings to signal the attack.
You signal your flight to attack but they haven't seen the Pups yet. As your
flight members spot the Pups, a flight of SPADs is climbing to join the fray.
Although your flight is greatly outnumbered you have no choice but to fight to
the last man in a desperate effort to save the mighty Zeppelin and the many
gallant crew members aboard her.

You line up on a Pup and fire a fatal burst as you see one of your wingmen
pursuing an enemy plane. You spot another Pup from the corner of your eye and
stalk him until you're position to give him a deflection burst. As the Pup
breaks right, you break left and line up on the Pup as it tries to climb out
of danger, One quick burst from your Spandaus and the Pup explodes. Although
you know better, you watch with grim fascination as the Allied plane falls to
earth.

As you scan the sky, you see no trace of your comrades. While you didn't see
it happen, they have probably been shot down.

The flight of SPADs levels out and makes an attack on the Zeppelin. As they
bore in on the behemoth, guns blazing, the Zepp puts up a wall of protective
fire. You turn to assist the Zepp and discover a lone Pup trying to get into
firing position on you. You kick hard right rudder and follow until you have
haim in your sights. A short burst finishes him off and you continue to turn
toward the embattled Zeppelin.

As the Zeppelin comes into view, enemy aircraft are falling in flames from
the deadly hail of fire issuing from the Zepp's guns. You see a lone SPAD,
with smoke trailing, going for the big dirigible. You urge your Albatros to
cover the distance to the SPAD as fast as it can. Just as you open fire on
the enemy plane, the SPAD spurts a stream of fire toward the Zeppelin. To your
dismay and horror, the huge ship erupts in great billows of flame along its
entire length and starts its long fall from the sky.

Nothing else can be done for the Zeppelin so you continue to push your plane
toward the enemy scout. Coming within range, you loose two angry chains of
fire from your Spandaus and the stricken SPAD heads for oblivion.

Still trembling with rage, you scour the sky for survivors, friend or enemy.
Then, as reality sinks in, you know that the comrades in your flight and those
manning the Zeppelin are gone forever.

You turn toward St. Marguerite dreading to face your squadron mates. The
mission was a terrible failure. Not only did the Zeppelin fail to bomb the
supply dump but its crew and your wingmen paid the ultimate price for nothing.
You derive a little satisfaction from the fact that, as far as you could tell,
all of the defending Allied planes were lost as well.

As you cross over the trenches, Your thoughts are interrupted by anti-
aircraft shells bursting around you. You kick rudder and change altitude to
throw the gunners off.

Safely on the German side you re-think the battle, making mental notes of
things that can help in future engagements. Almost automatically you do a
roll in grim salute to those brave airmen, German and Allied, who died this
night.

Continuing toward your aerodrome you clear the area occasionally in case
some enemy aircraft may be lurking. On your crosswind leg to landing you
look over your right shoulder and as you reach the approximate center of the
field, you turn right and guide your plane between the second and third
hangars so that the noise will alert the mechanics to your arrival. You
make a full stall touchdown on the grass just beyond the tarmac, and as you
roll to a stop, you cut the engine and lay your head back on the cockpit
combing and let the cool darkness begin to soothe your frayed nerves.

AUTHOR'S COMMENTS: To see in-flight messages (and sun effects), hit the
escape key once the tape is playing.
Jump in a new Fokker D.VIII and fly this RBT14J1 dawn patrol. Expect a
full day's work beginning with a raid on the Dunkirk Aerodrome. Then go
'train bustin' on the St. Omer RR; take in a (quick) tour of French occupied
Ypres and pay your respects to the sentinal in the bell tower of the old
church. At this point, St. Marguerite and safety are just on the other side
of no-man's land - but still time to pass out a few 'business cards' to the
muddy 'dough boys' on the way.
At least, that's the flight plan. Never hurts to bring your parachute
though - you just never know what to expect around here...
What? Another sortie in the afternoon! Maybe life in the trenches
isn't so bad...
