			  MOVIE EDITING CONTEST
in Conjunction with Red Baron Tournament 13
			    by Graeme von Cree

Here are the top tapes from the first Red Baron Movie Editing Contest.
Although only first place received an actual prize (and the coveted "Graemey"
award), enough good entries were received to warrant naming 2nd, 3rd, and
even 4th place finishers and including their work in this pkzip package,
to provide them some well-deserved recognition. The top finishers in the
contest are as follows:
		ͻ
		 1st - Joe Scoleri
		 2nd - David Tobias
		 3rd - Glenn Thorson
4th - Scott Mobley, Joe Fleming (tie)
		 Honourable Mention: Ron de Iso
		ͼ
Also enclosed in this package is "Attack of the Blue-Bottle Flies", my
own contribution to the contest (filename: democree.tap). Since it was
recorded on a 386, it may play too quickly on most machines, even using
XBaron, unless you use XBaron's speed controls to manually slow it down.
Incidentally, there are two utilities available in the Historic Air
Combat library that will enhance the viewability of these movies; XBaron,
and RBColor (filenames xb146.zip and rbcedit.zip respectively). Red Baron
.tap files sometimes play back at the wrong speed when played on different
machines than they were recorded on. A tape recorded on a fast machine will
play back too slowly on a slower machine, and vice versa. XBaron tries to
compensate for the differences, and provides manual speed controls.
RBColor allows the user to change the default colours of the various
planes in the game. Four of the tapes in this package have accompanying
colour files that are meant to be loaded before viewing the tapes, and in
two of them (Death of the Black Eagles, and Attack of the Blue-Bottle Flies,
the title won't make much sense otherwise). The version of RBColor in the
Forum library is shareware; the registered version is needed to use the
files included with this package.
It is recommended that before viewing any of the tapes, you start
a single mission, hit F10, and turn the GROUND DETAIL IN COMBAT switch to ON.
This will make most movies look much better, and with one of the entries
(2-tobias.tap) it is absolutely essential to understanding what is going on
near the end.

DESCRIPTION OF ENCLOSED TAPES

FIRST PLACE: "Death of the Black Eagles"
AUTHOR: Joe Scoleri [70671,1524]
FILENAME: 1-scoler.tap
MACHINE: 486/66 DX, using XBaron 1.46
MISSION: C - Escort Reconaissance
SITUATION: Tournament Mission, 2nd Attempt
COUNTER: 10:16
COLOUR FILE: rbc96.dat
COMMENTS: A flight of black Halberstadt's, led by Gring meets their
fate attempting to break up an Allied reconaissance flight.
Lots of interesting camera angles, including a good mix of
long and close-range shots, showing both foreground and
background action. An excellent study for anyone wishing
to get a feel for visualizing and creating their own tapes.

	SECOND PLACE: "Oops!"
AUTHOR: David Tobias [73300,2231]
FILENAME: 2-tobias.tap
MACHINE: 486/50 DX, using XBaron 1.44
MISSION: D - Stop Bombers
SITUATION: Tournament Mission
COUNTER: 5:01
COLOUR FILE: rbc97.dat
COMMENTS: After a short dogfight, Allied Spads make a dash for the
Gothas in a desperate attempt to stop them before they can
bomb the supply dump. In the nick of time the player
aircraft shoots down the last one; only to send it crashing
into the dump, obliterating it! Fortunately he is shot
down in a head-on pass with the second bomber wave before
having to face his furious CO.

	THIRD PLACE: "Pyrrhic Victory"
AUTHOR: Glenn Thorson [74232,1023]
FILENAME: 3-thorso.tap
MACHINE: 486 DX, without XBaron
MISSION: H - Escort Bombers
SITUATION: Post Tournament Refly
COUNTER: 17:20
COLOUR FILE: None
COMMENTS: The Germans take out both Allied bombers in the first pass,
then proceed to get slaughtered to a man. Officially this
goes down as a victory in their book, but they'd probably
rather have done without it. Highlights include an undamaged
Rickenbacker being downed by a single long range shot, and
a time compression shot near the end that gives the
impression of a plane entering warp drive.

FOURTH PLACE [1]: "All this Fuss Over Little Old Us?"
AUTHOR: Scott Mobley [73562,44]
FILENAME: 4-mobley.tap
MACHINE: Pentium 75, using XBaron
MISSION: C - Escort Reconaissance
SITUATION: Post Tournament Re-fly
COUNTER: 7:03
COLOUR FILE: None
COMMENTS: A little disagreement about whether or not Allied
reconaissance planes should be allowed to go about
their business leaves the ground littered with wrecked
fighter planes of both sides, while the recon planes go
on their merry way. Who says 2-seater pilots have no fun?

FOURTH PLACE [2]: "Pop Goes the Weasel"
AUTHOR: Joe "Lawndart" Fleming [71562,3147]
FILENAME: 4-flemin.tap
MACHINE: 486/33 DX, using XBaron
MISSION: G - Balloon Busting
SITUATION: Post Tournament Refly
COUNTER: 11:53
COLOUR FILE: None
COMMENTS: Luke and Co. pop all the German's balloons. Features the
		patented Spad power-dive balloon attack.

	HONORABLE MENTION: "Big Bird's Demise"
AUTHOR: Ron de Iso [72300,3645]
FILENAME: hm-deiso.tap
MACHINE: 486/66, using XBaron
MISSION: D - Stop Bombers
SITUATION: Tournament Entry; Masters Division
COUNTER: 15:16
COLOUR FILE: rbc98.dat
COMMENTS: A very well-edited mission by the main tournament judge, and
another excellent study of both movie editing techniques and
combat skill. The Spad 7's successfully intercept and down
both waves of German Gotha's. Good landing scene at the end.

DEMO TAPE: "Attack of the Blue-Bottle Flies"
AUTHOR: Graeme Cree [72630,304]
FILENAME: democree.tap
MACHINE: 386/25 SX, using XBaron 1.44
MISSION: B - Dogfight a Squadron
SITUATION: Post-tournament refly.
COUNTER: 7:50
COLOUR FILE: rbc99.dat
COMMENTS: Lord Flashheart, Squadron CO of the famed "Twenty-Minuters",
spots five blue-nosed Eindeckers and makes a run for Verdun
and its anti-aircraft defenses. He then turns and fights,
taking engine damage after his second kill, and an oil leak
after his fourth. With pressure dropping, he manages to
finish off Boelcke and make a forced landing outside the
city, his Bb riddled with bullets.
